Vote for Angel

Please read Angel's wonderful story below and then vote for her on the link provided at the END of her story. She is a wonderful dog and is trying to help other dogs!!!

We’re nominating Angel, our Sheltie for her work with a boy named Sage in a reading program at Cabell County Public Library in Huntington, WV. The program provides children who may have difficulty learning to read and children who are good readers an opportunity to read aloud for 20 minutes to a handler and dog team. The child reads with the dog next to him. The handler assists the child if necessary. Children read to Angel at the library Wednesday evenings.
When Sage started the program, all we knew was that he spent 2 years in silence in school, speaking only to his family. Sage had selective mutism, a social communication anxiety disorder. No one was sure whether he would read aloud but on his first night in the program, Sage immediately read to Angel.
At first Sage only read to Angel and did not speak to us. After a number of weeks, Sage began speaking to us in the library setting. After a year of weekly reading Sage saw us at a park and a pool and he almost couldn’t stop talking.

Hannah Tharp

hannahtharpI chose little victories because I love animals. I can't stand to see animals hurt. They are our friends and our family.

The main motivation for the money drive I did was having to do a Service Learning project for my 11th grade AP English class at Huntington High. I was way behind so I had to settle on something simple like a money drive. I raised the money by handing out jars with labels to every history teacher. My project was called Pennies For Pets and my goal was to raise $50. I tried to encourage donation by adding that the winning class would get several large bags of candy.
On April 27th, I collected most of the money. In the end, I raised a total of $84.16. The winning class was Brandon Maynard's with a total of about $56.
I was pleasantly surprised that I surpassed my goal of $50. I knew that it was going to a good cause however, because Little Victories is a no kill shelter and those are the best kind. On the day I went to deliver the money, the roads to Little Victories nearly flooded. We got the money to them, and that's all that really matters. I am happy to have made a difference, even if it isnt much. I am glad someone is helping neglected animals, even though I can't, and I am happy to contribute to such a worthy cause.
Sincerely,
Hannah Tharp

A big thanks goes out to Hannah!!

Chloe Watson ~ Volunteer

LVAdoptUsChloeHi, my name is Chloe Watson. I am a 3rd grade student at West Hamlin Elementary and I am a Jr. Volunteer at Little Victories Animal Rescue. I enjoy helping at the shelter and I also help at adoption events. I get to walk and play with the dogs! They like to get treats but they mostly like to have hugs and play. They are always happy to have visitors! The cats like for you to play with their toys and get their backs scratched.

Please volunteer at the shelter and help get the animals adopted!  Click on image for a larger view.

IMG 2356HUNTINGTON -- Thousands of students spent their summer vacations going swimming, hitting the road for the beach or just vegging out at home in the AC.

John Bruce spent his summer vacation joining the ranks of Neil Armstrong, Steven Spielberg and New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

Granted, the last three may not have earned their Eagle Scout ranking during summer vacation, but all of the men listed above met the same requirements to earn the highest honor attainable in the Boy Scouts of America.

John Bruce earned his Eagle Scout medal on July 21, a little more than a month before the Huntington High School honors graduate began his freshman year at Marshall University.
